Heritage -50

Let’s get the formality out of the way. Last Thursday, the #1 Yorktown Tigers beat the Guerin Catholic Golden Eagles in the 1st round of sectionals. Score is not important. What is important, are the great moments that this team had and the improvements they made over the course of the season. Yes, there were a few low points but many, many more high points.

Let’s go back to the beginning, the Golden Eagles returned three 1st team All-County players in Lauren Gandhi, Megan Hook and Molly Witt in addition to two Honorable Mention players in Kathryn Reifel and Jasmine Wolfgram. Kat Kovacich was returning from a yearlong injury to take the court for her Senior year. The team only lost two Seniors from the prior season and the coaches were absolutely stoked to get the season going. The team did not disappoint.

Right out of the gate, Guerin Catholic took out Heritage Christian and then had a match for the ages. Down 0-2 at New Palestine, the Golden Eagles stormed back to win the next 2 sets and then the tiebreaker 5th by 2 points. This was actually a trend for this year’s team as they played eight total matches that ended with a 2 point margin of victory in the tiebreaker set.

This was also the first year of the Circle City Conference and Chatard hosted a round robin tournament also including members Roncalli and Brebeuf. Guerin Catholic first beat 4A power Roncalli and missed winning the other two matches by… 2 points in the tiebreaker set.

As the season progressed, there were some matches that the Golden Eagles did not play their best, but many more where they did. The one match where it all came together in a fantastic way was the home contest against rival Brebeuf. The Golden Eagles had never tasted victory over the Braves, but this one was never really in doubt. The Nest was as loud as it had been all year and Brebeuf never knew what hit them in the dominating 3 set victory by Guerin Catholic.

Preview-2In the past few years the Golden Eagles finished runner-up in multiple tournaments but never took home the trophy, which also changed this year. Guerin Catholic earned Coach Feller’s 1st trophy at the Shelbyville Invitational by beating the host Golden Bears. The 2nd trophy was much harder to secure as the Golden Eagles had to beat two very tough teams in Covington and Covenant Christian to earn the Championship in the Cascade Invitational.

To finish the regular season, we had to say goodbye to five wonderful Golden Eagles on Senior Day. Jenn Cross, Lauren Gandhi, Amanda Gjerde, Kat Kovacich and Emma Scariano came out with their teammates and played outstanding for the exciting victory over Hamilton Heights by, you guessed it, 2 points in the tiebreaker set. A fitting end it was.

The Golden Eagles finished with a record of 18-16, but Coach Fellers was very pleased with the season. “We played a much harder schedule this year and still improved our record over last year. Half of our wins were against 4A teams or ranked 3A / 2A teams. Anyone can win many games if you schedule weaker opponents, but we didn’t, and the team responded well. I am proud of the team’s effort this year.”

To put a nice bow on the 2016 season, let’s recap – 1st ever victories over New Palestine, Roncalli and Brebeuf, two Tournament Championships, a winning record against much tougher competition and a bright future.
