Although the Guerin Catholic boys swim team dropped contests to Lawrence Central, Muncie Central, and Heritage Christian this week, the team, of which half the members are first-time swimmers, is making remarkable improvement.
Against Lawrence Central on Tuesday, Hugh Ross won the 50 Free and broke a school record doing it. Hugh followed up that performance by winning the 100 Butterfly and again broke the Guerin Catholic school record. Ryder McPhail won the 100 Breaststroke and narrowly missed breaking his own school record. The other winners were the 200 Medley Relay (Parker Schassberger, McPhail, Ross, Matthew Jones), as well as the 200 Free Relay (Schassberger, McPhail, Ross, Jones). But others are dropping time at an impressive rate. For instance, Keegan Kirkwood dropped an impressive 7 seconds in both the 100 Breast and the 200 Free, while Will Young dropped 15 seconds in the 500 Free.
On Thursday night the boys traveled to Muncie to take on Muncie Central and Heritage Christian. Although Ryker McPhail’s 100 Breast victory was the only one of the night for the Golden Eagles, improvement was obvious up and down Guerin Catholic’s lineup.
