Wrestlers Korbin Lane and JT Lazzara competed in the IHSAA Semi-State championships in New Castle yesterday. Lane was eliminated from the tournament after losing a very close match to Boone Welliever of Southmont in the first round. Welliever, a senior, went on to win the tournament and remain undefeated on the season. Lazzara beat Drake Tackett of Mt. Vernon (Fortville) in the first round before losing to eventual third place finisher Matthew Wertz of Zionsville.
Although neither wrestler will advance to the state championships, both had outstanding seasons. Lane finishes his junior year with a 26-9 record, while Lazzara finishes his senior campaign with a record of 37-9.
Lazzara led the team in falls (14), two-point nearfalls (10), three-point nearfalls (22), and escapes (35). He ends his wrestling career as the winningest and most accomplished wrestler in Guerin Catholic history, having also competed at Semi-State his sophomore year. JT also served as the team captain this season. Thank you for being a great team leader.
Congratulations, Korbin and JT!
