The Varsity Golden Eagles are on the back end of the season as they entered the premier event of the season hosted by Carmel High School. The Pre-State event saw 15 total teams in the gym on Saturday including your Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles were placed in the toughest pool of the day where the two opponents have both seen time in the top ten of the coaches pool at some point in this season, while also in the top fifteen of the RPI. The first matchup was against the Bulldogs of Columbus North. The opening set was an intense match where your Golden Eagles squeezed the opening set 25-22, however struggled in the remaining two sets where the Bulldogs pulled away. Their next opponent in the opening pool was two-time state champion Craig Cromwell and his Chesterton Trojans. The Golden Eagles again came out aggressively holding a 19-14 lead, but Chesterton closed the gap and taking the opening set 26-24. The Golden Eagles were gassed in their fifth straight set of volleyball and could not keep up with the fully energized Trojans.
In the second pool of the day the Golden Eagles found themselves battling the Wapahani Red Raiders and took care of business in two sets both 25-18, where the team was able to work on uncomfortable situations. The Golden Eagles then found a chance of redemption against Columbus North in another tight match. The opening set was 25-27 that fell in the favor of the Bulldogs. But Freshman Ben Persohn, Junior Drew McGrath, and Senior Jacob Banter refused to lose the match offensively and led the match on all ends. Sophomore setter Matt Spaletto ran a masterful offense that kept the Bulldogs guessing and the eventual upset of the 14th team in the state in three sets.
