The girls of the GC Softball team played their best ball when it counted,in the Sectional Championship game v. Tipton on Saturday night. Unfortunately they came up a run short, falling 3-2 in the bottom of the 7th, capping off a memorable season with the sectional runner-up game ball.
Pitching in her second game of the day, after a 10 inning 3-0 win that ended 3 hours earlier, Senior Sarah Miller went the distance once again. Miller and her teammates worked to hold the opponents to 14 scoreless innings on the day. Eventually in the bottom of the fifth Tipton took a 2-0 lead, which seemed like it might be enough to do in the Golden Eagles who were struggling to get things going on offense. But, Coach Collins and his team came right back in the top of the sixth to tie it right back up.
Senior Julie Gallina started the comeback with a single. Sophomore Maddie Buckner took one for the team getting hit in the back of the leg (currently wearing a huge bruise as a souvenir), followed by a Sophomore Hanna Bills walk to load the bases. Once again Miller stepped up and delivered an RBI base hit to close the gap to 2-1. Two batters later Senior Kelby Sullivan delivered the game tying base hit.
With the game tied at two in the bottom of the 7th the speedy Tipton leadoff batter reached on a bunt single, stole 2nd and was bunted to third. With one out Tipton tried a squeeze play, Miller was able to field the bunt and flip to Sullivan to get the out at home. With Two outs and a runner on third, the GC season came to an end on a base hit from the Blue Devils.
The closeness the team had developed throughout the offseason, carried into the season as was no more evidenced than at the end of the game, as the girls game together to support each other. The team was greeted by a gathering of supporters in front of GC and the team exchanged more hugs and memories.
