Every program experiences changes from one season to another, the 2017 Golden Eagle volleyball team is no exception. This season will see a new coach, a new sectional, new players and even new uniforms. Head Coach Ashley Pertile looks to continue the upward trend of this program that fellow Martinsville alum Kimi Fellers experienced. Over the past 3 years, the Golden Eagles raised the win total every season and Coach Pertile is looking to greatly improve that number again this season. The team graduated five valuable seniors from last year, but several talented newcomers are stepping in with the returning varsity players that aim to win the school’s first sectional title. Guerin Catholic was moved from the brutal Delta sectional, with 2016 State Champion Yorktown, to a bracket with Cardinal Ritter, Brebeuf, Bishop Chatard, Broad Ripple, Crispus Attucks and Northwest.
The Golden Eagle front line will feature several decorated returning players. Four year starter and two-time All-County selection Molly Witt will share middle hitter duties with returning junior Emily Zlatniski. In addition senior Claire Murray and junior Lauren Cobb both return along with sophomore transfer Izzie McGuinness to contribute in the middle hitter / right side hitter duties. For the third year in a row, All-Conference junior Jasmine Wolfgram and Honorable Mention All-County junior Kathryn Reifel will be featured at the outside hitter position while both will also be seen playing some defense. Senior Reagan Ney and junior Grace Scariano will also see valuable court time at the net. Returning sophomore Ashley Utnage and senior Isabel Couto will be the ones in charge of setting these talented hitters.
The defense will be anchored by four year starter and All-County libero Megan Hook. Juniors Julia Quinn and Catalina Dunansky, along with sophomore transfer Olivia McCall, will also be shoring up the back court keeping the opponents’ hits off the floor.
With all of the changes, one thing stays the same, this team loves playing at The Nest in front of the great Guerin Catholic fans. Coach Pertile thinks there will be much for the fans to enjoy this season. “We are going to have a great year because we are talented, tough and experienced. In addition these athletes are not only my players, they are my family. And families can accomplish great things together. I can’t wait to get the season started.” The season is front loaded with home matches with 4 in August and only 3 in September and October.
It starts Monday with a road contest against Circle City Conference member Heritage Christian. The first home game is Wednesday 8/16 vs. New Palestine. The Golden Eagles beat the Dragons in a 5 set thriller last year, so the team would love to see The Nest packed for the opener.
