The 2017 Guerin Catholic volleyball season is in the books and the Golden Eagles ended the campaign as sectional runner-up to Brebeuf. In fact it was the third year in a row that Guerin Catholic fell to a team that participated in the State Finals.
The season kicked off with a victory against Heritage Christian and for the most part the rest of the matches went to form. The Golden Eagles scored victories against the teams they were supposed to beat, and came up short to more talented teams. The IHSAA cut a week from the season, a couple tournaments were cancelled and one team forgot about the match so Guerin Catholic ended up with a 10-16 record in the shorter season and finished 4th in the Circle City Conference.
There were several highlights throughout the season. Pack the House night was against CCC foe Bishop Chatard and the Nest was absolutely rocking and very, very loud. The Golden Eagles came out on fire in the first set behind the wonderful fan support. Senior Night was against future CCC opponent Covenant Christian and a wonderful presentation was put on for the five seniors, plus Jasmine Wolfgram played a great version of the National Anthem on her viola. The team came out in brand new uniforms and played inspired against a very good team.
We will have to say goodbye to five seniors. Isabel Couto, Reagan Ney, Claire Murray plus 4-year starters Megan Hook and Molly Witt, these five will be missed in the 2018 campaign. We wish the best of luck to these ladies in their future endeavors. In addition our two great managers, Jason Gandhi and Dylan Stagge are graduating and will also be missed next year.
A few career records were established this season.
- Jasmine Wolfgram set the new career record with 2414 attack attempts.
- Molly Witt now holds the career record in blocks with 246.
- Megan Hook added to her record in digs and finished her career with 1660.
The end of the year banquet was a fun way to finish the year. All of the players, coaches and families had a great time. The three captains (Molly Witt, Reagan Ney and Jasmine Wolfgram) all received awards for their leadership this season. Michael Bailey received the inaugural GCHS Fan Award and his “7th Man” tee shirt for tirelessly supporting the Golden Eagle volleyball team. Megan Hook earned The Golden Eagle Award and Claire Murray earned the St Theodore Guerin Award.
In closing, first year Head Coach Ashley Pertile had this to say, “I am so proud of the players in this program. They have worked hard on and off the court. While there is still work to be done as we build this program, each individual has left their mark for future players to build upon. We will miss our amazing senior athletes and managers dearly but we cannot wait to see what the future holds for them. The coaching staff feels blessed to be able to coach such wonderful student athletes and to watch them grow in their faith life.”
