Game Recap

A raucous Senior Night crowd at the Eagles Nest saw Guerin Catholic hold Indianapolis Washington seventeen points under their average Friday night in a 96-53 victory in boys basketball.

A 28-point first quarter by the Golden Eagles was duplicated in the third quarter, as Guerin Catholic had their second highest scoring output of the season. After five lead changes in the first four minutes of the contest, the Continentals were no match for Coach Pete Smith’s team. The lead eventually ballooned to 45 points in the fourth quarter at 93-48.

Behind 64.6% field goal shooting, Guerin Catholic had four players score in double figures. Zach Munson not only scored a career-high 30 points, he also was game high in rebounds with 11. The U. of Chicago-bound senior outscored Washington by himself 17-11 in the third period, as well. Others scoring in double figures were Jack Hansen, Kian Sills, and Bernie McGuinness with 18, 17, and 13 points, respectively. Drew Thieme almost joined them, scoring nine. Clay Hepp passed out a career-high nine assists for the Golden Eagles (13-7). The team overall had a school-record 31 assists, breaking the previous school record of 28 against Indpls. Ritter on February 6, 2009 and 28 at Terre Haute South on February 18, 2014.

Washington (8-12) and the Golden Eagles both committed 16 turnovers in the contest, but made up for it with a 38-19 rebounding advantage and the strong shooting from the field. “It’s always nice to see the seniors go out with a win on Senior Night, and after the first few minutes I thought we did some nice things,” said Smith. “The turnover number is way too high, but eleven guys played in the game, and some of our in-game line-up combinations hadn’t played together. I’ll give them a break on a few TO’s, but . . . .”

The Golden Eagles play on the road their final three contests of the regular season, starting Tuesday night at potential sectional foe Broad Ripple in a game that was postponed from January 12 due to weather.
