Game Recap

Guerin Catholic opened IHSAA Sectional 27 play with a 71-51 win over Circle City Conference rival Bishop Chatard Tuesday night at The Eagles Nest.

The Golden Eagles raced out to an 18-9 lead after one quarter, and held a commanding 37-20 halftime lead behind Kian Sills’ 11 points. Guerin was 15-22 from from the field for a sizzlin’ 68%, but committed six turnovers in those first 16 minutes. “We were ready to play; a bit too fired up and were loose with the ball early,” said Coach Pete Smith in his postgame interview.

But to Chatard’s credit, the Trojans fought back behind a 7-0 run in the third quarter to get themselves in striking distance. They actually cut Guerin’s lead to 50-43 with the first basket to start the fourth quarter. However Guerin Catholic dashed any hopes of a comeback though, and the lead got back to 20 points towards the end of the contest behind 13-14 free throw shooting as the Trojans had to foul. Smith said his team lost focus and intensity in the third quarter, and credited Chatard for playing hard and showing great fight. But that wasn’t enough, and it marked the tenth straight loss for the Trojans at the hands of GC, and the all-time series now stands at 11-4 between the two parochial schools.

Four Golden Eagles scored in double figures. Jack Hansen finished with 19 points, while point guard Clay Hepp had a career-high 14 points despite foul trouble. Sills’ ended with 13, and Zach Munson added 12. GC held a 33-21 rebounding advantage, with Hansen grabbing a game-high nine. Luke Godfrey passed out 7 assists as Guerin Catholic improves to 16-8. Chatards’ season ends at 10-12.

Cardinal Ritter (13-7) drew the bye, and will take on Smith’s team Friday night at 6:00. “I’ve really been impressed with them,” said the coach. “My coaches and I watched them beat a real strong Tri-West team last Friday night. They have nice size and a good backcourt. They will really be tough to beat.”
