INTRODUCTION TO START PRACTICE/GAME

This week we are going to focus on the virtue of TEAMWORK – The strength to put the good of the team above one’s own personal good. (Share a memory from this season when you saw the team really, really live the spirit and virtue of TEAMWORK whether it be in a practice, game, or other situation.)

PRAYER

God You are the perfect example of TEAMWORK. Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Three Persons yet One God. May we follow Your example as we are many teammates yet we are one team. Help us to set aside all our differences and truly be a TEAM in our efforts to be the best we can be.

Does anyone have any prayer intentions? Who wants to lead us in a prayer?

STORY TO TELL IMMEDIATELY AFTER PRAYER

NO STICKERS

There was a Running Back – Kick/Punt Returner on a team.

He was one of the best athletes in the state of KY.

The young man’s nickname was “Flea” – not too big but hard to see and hard to catch …

They hand out award stickers on Mondays from the previous game so the players can put them on their helmets …

Coach hands Flea 2 more for his performance and he begins to walk away.

“Flea, where are you going?” “I’m going to give these to my offensive linemen … without them I don’t get any yards”

Coach later sees the back of Flea’s helmet – which should have over 20 stickers on it … NOT 1.

He has given them all away.

QUESTION TO ENGAGE PLAYERS

Organize (describe) a team party that you could realistically have between now and the end of the season. Ask your players to come up with the following: Theme for the party, food, drink, games, competitions, location, how you plan on getting everyone on the team to it, how you will pay for it … Then do it and have some fun as a team.

RESOLUTION TO WORK ON DURING PRACTICE/GAME

Let’s practice the virtue of TEAMWORK right now by truly playing as a team, passing, encouraging and never criticizing one another.

Coach, look for players living TEAMWORK especially those who might have struggled with it beforehand. Tell them you noticed their effort and that you are proud of them.

MENTORING MOMENT

Ask individually as many players as you can during practice/game the below:

Which member of our team helps us work together the most? What do they do that helps?

Tell me about your cousins and extended family. Do you come from a big extended family?

END OF PRACTICE/GAME PRAYER

Thank You Lord for the blessing and gift to be a part of this TEAM. There are many people in this world who are lonely, who are alone, who are sick in hospitals … They don’t have a TEAM like ours to be a part of. We pray that You help them in their loneliness and sickness. We also want to thank (name a few teammates who lived the virtue during that practice/game). We can all be more a TEAM this week by doing our part to help make the team party happen.

WAY TO LIVE THE VIRTUE THIS WEEK

Do your part to help make the team party happen.

Remind players to tell their parents and siblings the story.

BIBLE QUOTE

Romans 12: 8-10

Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us exercise them: if prophecy, in proportion to the faith; if ministry, in ministering; if one is a teacher, in teaching; if one exhorts, in exhortation; if one contributes, in generosity; if one is over others, with diligence; if one does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. Let love be sincere; hate what is evil, hold on to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; anticipate one another in showing honor.
