INTRODUCTION TO START PRACTICE/GAME

Our virtue this week is INTEGRITY – The strength to be consistent between your values and your actions. There is the common phrase, “Practice what you preach” which we have all heard. That sums up INTEGRITY very well. It is easy to talk the talk or say you believe in something but then act completely different. Just like it is easy to say you are “All In” with our team and yet still give half-hearted effort. Let’s live INTEGRITY each and every one of us.

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, You better than anyone else in history “practiced what You preached.” You do not ask us to do anything You did not do or live Yourself. You prayed, You sacrificed, You worked, You sweat … Grant us the strength and the light to always be consistent between our values and our actions.

Does anyone have any prayer intentions? Who wants to lead us in a prayer?

STORY TO TELL IMMEDIATELY AFTER PRAYER

CAPTAIN AMERICA

Of course this is a comic movie … fantasy … there are still things we can glean from it. In the movie Captain America, Steve Rogers, is a short, small, weak human being.

There is a scientist who has created a serum that gives strength, speed, height, power … enhances the physical qualities to create a stronger man. Steve is chosen to be the man, the guinea pig to test this serum … to create the more powerful soldier. The night before the procedure he has a conversation with the scientist … naturally he asks, “Why Me?”

Hitler hears of me. My work and he finds me. And he says, you will make us strong. Well I am not interested. So he sends the head of hydra, his research division. A brilliant scientist by the name of Johann Schmidt. Now Schmidt is a member of the inner circle and he is ambitious …

So when he hears about my formula and what it can do, he cannot resist. Schmidt must become that superior man. “Did it make him stronger?” Yes. But there were other effects. The serum wasn’t ready but more important, THE MAN.

The serum amplifies everything that is inside, so good becomes great. Bad becomes worse. This is why you were chosen. Because a strong man who has known power all his life may lose respect for that power, but a weak man knows the value of strength. And knows compassion. “Thanks. I think.”

Whatever happens tomorrow, you must promise me one thing. That you will stay who you are. Not a perfect soldier but A GOOD MAN

QUESTION TO ENGAGE PLAYERS

If you were in charge of this “experiment”, what qualities or virtues would you think are the most important for the recipient to have?

RESOLUTION TO WORK ON DURING PRACTICE/GAME

Today let’s give our teammates the credit after a big play.

MENTORING MOMENT

Ask individually as many players as you can during practice/game the below:

What does INTEGRITY, The strength to be consistent between your values and your actions, have to do with our sport?

Do you find superhero movies inspiring? Why or Why not?

END OF PRACTICE/GAME PRAYER

Thank You, Lord, for this opportunity to gather as a team and play this game we love. Thank You for our health, our abilities, our talents and those of our teammates.

Thank You especially for the example of (name a few teammates who lived the virtue during that practice/game). Help us all to be live the virtue of INTEGRITY this week by talking to our parents and/or grandparents about the goals we set for this season. In Your name we pray. Amen.

BIBLE QUOTE

2 Corinthians 8: 20-21

This we desire to avoid, that anyone blame us about this lavish gift administered by us, for we are concerned for what is honorable not only in the sight of the Lord but also in the sight of others.

SAINT

St. Perpetua

St. Perpetua was a young, well-educated, noblewoman and mother living in the city of Carthage in North Africa. Her mother was a Christian and her father was a pagan. In terms of her faith, Perpetua followed the example of her mother. Despite the pleas of her father to deny her faith, Perpetua did the very opposite, and fearlessly proclaimed it. At the age of 22, she was imprisoned for her faith. While in prison she continued to care for her infant child and put up with the tortures designed to make her renounce her faith. Perpetua remained steadfast until the end. St. Perpetua was sacrificed at the games as a public spectacle for not renouncing her faith.
