The Golden Eagles lost in heartbreaking fashion to eventual sectional champion Brebeuf Jesuit, but the season ending finish won’t define the identity of the 2019-2020 boys basketball team. Rather, there was a 8 game winning streak, an undefeated day at the Roncalli Holiday Classic and a finish in the top half of the Circle City Conference. While a bounce here and a bucket there may have provided a different ending to an otherwards solid season, Coach Bobby Allen was pleased with the growth of his team in his second year at the helm.
“As a group we felt confident that we could play with anyone on our schedule, which was an improvement from last year. We found ourselves competitive in every game this season against a schedule that challenged us every night. It was exciting to coach a group of young men that love the game of basketball. We had great leadership from a group of seniors that were dedicated to improving every practice. As a coach, it is energizing to see your players working on their own time to improve their individual skills and then to see it pay off for them on the court is extremely fulfilling.”
The team was led by 4 seniors all of whom played pivotal roles. When next season rolls around, the Golden Eagles will have to replace just under 50% of their scoring from these seniors. Cam Weitzel and Kameron Osswald stepped up in their roles from a year prior providing valuable minutes as both starters and key bench players. Dominic Ferrucci, used primarily in defensive situations brought a team-first approach and was just recently named Honorable Mention Academic All-State by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association. Bernie McGuinness finished his Guerin Catholic career with 966 points while averaging nearly 21 points a game and 7 rebounds in his senior season which solidified his spot on the Circle City All-Conference team.
Joining McGuinness on the All-Conference team was junior point guard Joseph Bobilya. Bobilya, along with junior teammate Kaleb Edwards were instrumental in the team’s success this year as they both made tremendous jumps in contributions, especially on the scoring end. Bobilya was often tasked with guarding the opponent’s best player while totaling the most minutes on the team and averaging 11.5ppg. Edwards continued to trend upward as the season progressed and finished his first full-time varsity year with 10.3ppg with his best play yet to come. To round out the starting five, Matthew Gillis provided a solid presence in the front court and was playing his best basketball toward the end of the year.
After a 2-2 start to the year, the Golden Eagles ripped off 8 straight wins to ensure a 13th consecutive year of a winning season dating back to Pete Smith’s time as head coach. The team’s record improved as well from 13-11 to 15-8 in Coach Allen’s second year. After a one year jump from 5th to 3rd in Circle City Conference play and an improvement in both offensive average (59.5 to 63.7ppg) and defensive average (56.2 to 54.6ppg), the Golden Eagles will continue the strong Guerin Catholic basketball tradition as they take aim at a conference and sectional title in 2021.
Said Coach Allen, “As our staff looks forward to next season we know that we return a lot of pieces and experience, but we have some younger players that are hungry to find a role on this team. Practice will be extremely competitive as members of a very successful JV team that finished 15-7 look to have an impact on the Varsity squad. Although we will miss our four seniors, we are looking forward to an offseason that will prepare our program for another giant leap next season.”
