INTRODUCTION

Our virtue theme this week is CREATIVITY – The strength to generate new ideas and concepts. Many times in life we must “make lemonade out of the lemons we receive” meaning that we must make the best out of our circumstances such as injuries, bad weather, sickness, death of a loved one, losing one’s job, etc. Finding creative ways to succeed and improve is a must.

PRAYER

God our Father, You are our CREATOR. You have CREATED all things and all people out of nothing. Any CREATIVITY we have is Your gift and Your blessing. Strengthen us today so that we might be CREATIVE in finding new ways to improve, never letting our circumstances keep us down.

Does anyone have any prayer intentions? Who wants to lead us in a prayer?

STORY

Play-Doh

The soft, putty-like, reusable modeling compound that came to be known as “Play-Doh” was originally named Rainbow Modeling Compound.

It was made by Noah McVicker of Cincinnati-based soap manufacturer Kutol Products; it was devised at the request of Kroger Grocery, which wanted a product that could clean coal residue from wallpaper.

Following World War II, with the transition from coal-based home heating to natural gas and the resulting decrease in internal soot, and the introduction of washable vinyl-based wallpaper, the market for wallpaper cleaning putty decreased substantially.

McVicker’s nephew, Joe McVicker, joined Kutol and was asked to save the company from bankruptcy. He later discovered that the wallpaper cleaner was being used by nursery school children to make Christmas ornaments. So Joe took Play-Doh to school conventions and department stores and soon Play-Doh was reaching kids everywhere.

More than two billion cans of Play-Doh have been sold in 75 countries around the world at 95 million cans a year.

Play-Doh was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame at The Strong in Rochester, New York, in 1998.

In 2003, the Toy Industry Association placed Play-Doh into its “Century of Toys List”, a roll call of the 100 most memorable and most creative toys of the twentieth century.

QUESTIONS

Did you ever think Play-Doh was originally designed to clean wallpaper?

Have you ever come up with a creative use for something?

RESOLUTION

Before we complain, or sigh or wish something were different, let’s all think of a creative way to make our situation better today.

MENTORING

How do you think we can make better use of our time as a team at school/practice?

Tell me about a time your Mom or Dad was creative?

PRAYER

Thank You, Lord, for this opportunity to learn to make the most out of every situation.

Help us to be CREATIVE this week by coming up with a new way we can each help out more at home and then doing it to serve our family. Amen.

WAY TO LIVE THE VIRTUE THIS WEEK

Think of a new way you can help out at home and do it. Be creative.
