Game Recap

Guerin Catholic’s boys basketball team shot 57% from the field and retained the Bishop’s Cup in the Eagles Nest Friday night, defeating Lafayette Central Catholic 90-73. Junior Matthew Godfrey got the Golden Eagles out to a 22-17 lead after one quarter by nailing three 3-point shots in the stanza. Then it was Christian Munson’s turn, scoring 14 points in the second quarter to extend the Golden Eagles lead to twelve points, 47-35, at the halftime break. Central Catholic (10-4) battled Guerin Catholic to 25-25 tie in the third quarter before six different Golden Eagles scored in the final stanza to put the game away. “We were efficient on offense,” said Coach Pete Smith, who’s team improved to 7-11. “We had a size advantage and Jack (Hansen) and Munny scored a lot in the paint for us tonight. But I was not real thrilled with our defensive concentration. We had trouble staying in front of the basketball; that has to get better.” Munson finished with 30 points while Godfrey had seven 3’s and 25 points. Hansen finished with 15 points, and the offensive execution was enhanced by Cameron Lindley’s career-high 11 assists. It is the third year in a row that the Bishop’s Cup stays in Noblesville. The two schools are the two high schools of the Lafayette Diocese. Central Catholic now trails in the series 5-2. Tuesday night Coach Smith will coach in bare feet for his annual Samaritan’s Feet night. The opponent will be Indianapolis Scecina.

Game Recap

The Guerin Catholic Golden Eagles were looking for a spark following the disappointing loss on Friday night to Brebeuf Jesuit and the spark came in the form of Seniors Sarah Yount and Annamarie Augustinovicz. Yount came ready to play, hitting 9 of 13 from the floor, including 5 3-pointers, to lead all scorers with 29 points. It is a career high for Yount and leaves her just 3 points from reaching the 1000-point mark for her career at Guerin Catholic. Augie added 19 points for the Golden Eagles.

Bethesda Christian took an early 2-0 lead before Yount drained two long 3-pointers and assisted on a layup by Augie as the Golden Eagles capped an 8-0 run. After a free throw by the Patriots, Erin Fuller hit a 3-pointer from the corner to put GCHS up 11-3. BC used a 6-3 run to close out the first period, with Guerin Catholic leading 14-9.

The second quarter was back and forth as Bethesda managed to narrow the lead to 1 point, only to have Guerin Catholic stretch the lead to 7 points at 26-19 before an Allie Walters 3-pointer with less than ten seconds remaining made the halftime score 26-22, in favor of the Golden Eagles.

The third quarter was similar to the second period, the Walker nailing a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 1 point, and then she hit a field goal to give BC its first lead since the score was 2-0. The remainder of the period saw several lead changes and ties until Augie hit two free throws at the end of period to give Guerin Catholic a 41-39 lead going into the final period.

The fourth quarter belonged to Yount, as she lead the Golden Eagles to an 18-0 run, scoring 12 points, including 5 of 6 from the free throw line to help put the game away. The only BC points of the period came on an Walker layup with less than 3 ticks left on the clock.

Up next for the Golden Eagles will be a rivalry game at the Eagles Nest against Lafayette Central Catholic, in a boys/girls doubleheader. Sarah Yount goes for the 1000-point mark and the Eagles look to pull the upset against the defending 1A state champions. The game tips off at 6:00 p.m., followed by the boys at 7:30. The Golden Eagles will close out the regular season on Saturday with a game against Marshall at Guerin Catholic. Game time is at 2:30 p.m.
