The Golden Eagles (6-5) trailed six times in the first ten minutes of the contest, but a 16-2 run to end the first half gave them a 42-31 lead heading into the locker room.

Guerin Catholic actually trailed 4-0 to start the contest, However back to back 3-pt. field goals by Kian Sills and Jack Hansen got GC the lead, and they were never challenged after that. A nine point lead after the first quarter ballooned to a 43-17 halftime advantage as Guerin Catholic made 16-32 field goal attempts. But they even improved on that percentage after halftime, connecting on 23-33 field goals (69.6%). With the easy win the Golden Eagles (5-4) advance to this morning’s tournament semi-final against an undefeated University squad.

Drew Thieme notched career-highs of 17 points (including a perfect 8-8 from the field) and a game-high 9 rebounds. Also finishing in double-figures were Hansen with 25, Zach Munson with 15, junior Roc Ricker with 13, and sophomore Bernie McGuinness with 12. Clay Hepp dished out a game-high 6 assists and helped the team to a season-low 6 turnovers for the game.

On December 1, 2009, the Golden Eagles’ team defeated Elwood 100-29 and went on to win the school’s first-ever sectional championship. The most points GC has ever scored was in a 105-51 victory at Oldenburg Academy on January 26, 2008. Both years GC was a 2A school.

Last year Guerin Catholic met University in the 3rd place game of the 8-school tournament, winning a 71-64 overtime battle. This season the winner between the two Hamilton County teams will advance to the championship contest at 8:30 tonight against the winner of the Indpls. Howe-Vincennes Lincoln semi-final

Game Recap

Guerin Catholic boys basketball led from start to finish Friday, winning on the road at Lapel 53-43.

Clay Hepp dished out five assists during a 21-2 run, and his second three-pointer and eight points in quarter paved the way for the Golden Eagles (4-4) to lead 28-10 at halftime. “Neither team shot the ball well tonight, but Clay’s decision-making really got us off to a great start,” said Guerin Catholic coach Pete Smith. “Clay found Zach (Munson) on some early mismatches for buckets, and also made a couple nice steals.”

Guerin Catholic built it’s lead to 38-13 before the Bulldogs mounted a comeback, forcing eight GC turnovers after that. Lapel only connected on 15 of 52 shots in the contest, but was a sizzling 9-12 in the fourth quarter to make the final score a lot closer than the game actually was. Munson’s 16 points and game-high 11 rebounds included five points in the final stanza that thwarted the Dogs’ comeback hopes. Drew Thieme had all five of his points in the final period as well.

Hepp was the only Golden Eagle to shoot 50% from the field Friday night, which continues to be Smith’s teams’ struggle at this point of the season. “We have to get out of the shooting funk we’ve been in; the sooner we do, the better,” Smith joked. “Some of that’s due to rushing some easy shots, and some of our shot selection hasn’t always good, too. But we played some good defense tonight, led by Kian (Sills) with five steals.” GC also dominated the boards, winning the rebounding battle 43-28.

It was the the third straight win for CG when they’ve played at Lapel’s Dog House gymnasium Friday night. Overall the series now stands at 6-4 in favor of the Golden Eagles. The team will travel to Vincennes next weekend to play in the McDonald’s Holiday Hoops Classic. The eight team tourney starts on Friday, December 29, and GC will see action at 4:30 that afternoon against North Knox’s Warriors.
