Game Recap

Guerin Catholic boys basketball led from start to finish Friday, winning on the road at Lapel 53-43.

Clay Hepp dished out five assists during a 21-2 run, and his second three-pointer and eight points in quarter paved the way for the Golden Eagles (4-4) to lead 28-10 at halftime. “Neither team shot the ball well tonight, but Clay’s decision-making really got us off to a great start,” said Guerin Catholic coach Pete Smith. “Clay found Zach (Munson) on some early mismatches for buckets, and also made a couple nice steals.”

Guerin Catholic built it’s lead to 38-13 before the Bulldogs mounted a comeback, forcing eight GC turnovers after that. Lapel only connected on 15 of 52 shots in the contest, but was a sizzling 9-12 in the fourth quarter to make the final score a lot closer than the game actually was. Munson’s 16 points and game-high 11 rebounds included five points in the final stanza that thwarted the Dogs’ comeback hopes. Drew Thieme had all five of his points in the final period as well.

Hepp was the only Golden Eagle to shoot 50% from the field Friday night, which continues to be Smith’s teams’ struggle at this point of the season. “We have to get out of the shooting funk we’ve been in; the sooner we do, the better,” Smith joked. “Some of that’s due to rushing some easy shots, and some of our shot selection hasn’t always good, too. But we played some good defense tonight, led by Kian (Sills) with five steals.” GC also dominated the boards, winning the rebounding battle 43-28.

It was the the third straight win for CG when they’ve played at Lapel’s Dog House gymnasium Friday night. Overall the series now stands at 6-4 in favor of the Golden Eagles. The team will travel to Vincennes next weekend to play in the McDonald’s Holiday Hoops Classic. The eight team tourney starts on Friday, December 29, and GC will see action at 4:30 that afternoon against North Knox’s Warriors.

Game Recap

Lafayette Jeff rallied from a six-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat Guerin Catholic 62-57 in boys basketball Saturday night to remain undefeated on the season.

Guerin Catholic fell behind early and trailed 30-22 at halftime. But Coach Pete Smith’s squad came roaring back after halftime. Behind Bernie McGuinness’ nine third quarter points, the Golden Eagles outscored Jeff 24-11 in the stanza to take a five point lead entering the fourth quarter.

Zach Munson made one of two free throws on the first possession of the fourth quarter to give GC a 47-41 lead. Back to back 3-pt. field goals by the Bronchos’ Alex Cotton tied the game at 47. Four lead changes took place after that in the quarter, but four GC turnovers and a 10-12 shooting effort at the free throw line by Jeff decided the contest in favor of the Bronchos (7-0).

The Golden Eagles made five more field goals in the contest than their opponents, but was outscored at the free throw line 13-1. “We settled for too many perimeter jumpers instead of attacking the rim,” said Smith. “Our shot selection and execution on offense needs a lot of improvement. We lost their main shooter in our zone some, too. I thought we fought back real well in the third quarter and started to execute, but struggled offensively against their pressure defense in the fourth quarter.”

Girls Varsity Sideline Cheer · Cheerleaders make Rosaries for men & women in the Military

The Guerin Catholic Cheerleaders gathered Tuesday December 12th to celebrate the season by making rosaries which will be given to Father Joshua Janko, the former Chaplain at Guerin Catholic who is now serving in the armed forces, to distribute to men and women in the military service.  Each member of the cheer team made a rosary and wrote a note of love and encouragement to the person who will receive it.  We are very grateful to the 3 members of the St. Elizabeth Seton Parish, Clo Lillig, and Dick & Kathy Stadler, who volunteered to teach the cheerleaders how to make the rosaries.  Father Haan was present to bless the rosaries and to pray for those that made them and those who will receive them.  Making these rosaries was a powerful reminder for the team of the debt of gratitude we owe those men & women who put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms and our very lives.  After finishing the rosaries the cheer team enjoyed a cookie exchange and Secret Santa gift exchange.  The Cheer team would like to wish everyone a safe & blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year.
